There are expected to be 226,870 new cases of breast cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society. To help combat the horrible disease, the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be holding a 5k fundraising race on September 9.

The Race will take place along the Embarcadero, starting and finishing at the Ferry Building. Shortly after the race begins at 9 a.m., the event’s organizers will start 5k and 1-mile fun walks for people not interested in running. The fun walks will begin at the same location as the run.

After the race concludes, racers and walkers alike will be invited to participate in the “Survivor Tribute & Celebration”, an event that will honor breast cancer survivors. Race participants will also be allowed to attend the “Health and Fitness Expo” at Justin Herman Plaza.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation is the largest network of breast cancer survivors in the world. The organization has been controversial, with charges of discrimatory funding for cancer research and women’s cancer detection clinics, as well as of endorsing high-fat food products and “pink” perfumes with toxic ingredients.

However, the organization has contributed over 1.9 billion to breast cancer prevention measures. The foundation has been holding the San Francisco Race for 22 years. It has been holding similar races in other parts of the world for 29 years.
