A marathon is 26.2 miles long. San Francisco is roughly 49 square miles in size. How do marathon organizers arrange races in the city without taking over half of it? Somehow, they make it work. This year, the Wipro San Francisco Marathon will take place from 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on July 29. Runners can participate in the event in a number of different ways. They can choose to run the entire 26.2 miles, or they can split the race in half. Whole-run marathoners will have to begin and end their runs at the Ferry Building. Half-run marathoners will have to begin either at the Ferry Building or at Golden Gate Park.

Those who are not interested in running the entire marathon can participate in the “5k and Progressive Marathon.” Essentially, runners in this race will have to run 23.1 miles prior to July 29. Then on July 29, they will only have to complete a 5k run. Runners who are interested in learning more about the marathon can find this information at http://www.thesfmarathon.com. "The San Francisco Marathon has begun to build a reputation, attracting endurance athletes from around the country and the globe, who come to this event to share the same amazing aspects of the city that the residents love,” according to the event’s website.
