Have you always wanted to learn gardening? Did you think it was not possible to learn gardening in urban San Francisco? During the month of June, a San Francisco group — Garden for the Environment — will offer several courses on how to farm within the city.
On June 2, the group will offer a course called “Urban Composting.” As its title suggests, the course will teach people how to turn their organic waste into viable fertilizer. A week later on June 9, the group will offer a course called “Grow Your Own Food: Seasonal Organic Vegetable Gardening.” Not surprisingly, the course will teach people how to grow vegetables.
Later in the month, the group will teach a course on urban beekeeping.
Many of the courses take place at a small organic garden at 7th and Lawton Streets. The garden is located on land owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. It is used to demonstrate small-scale urban organic food production, organic gardening, low-water landscaping and urban compost systems.
Most Garden for the Environment courses are free; however, some require a small fee. Those who are interested in taking the courses can find more information on their website, http://www.gardenfortheenvironment.org.
