Aug. 15th marked the Grand Opening of NEW PEOPLE, a unique destination at 1746 Post St. in the heart of San Francisco’s historic Japantown. There was an all- day outdoor music and entertainment forum.
NEW PEOPLE, a 20,000-sq. ft. build ing distinguished by its striking three- story transparent glass façade features the latest examples of Japanese popular ema of its type in the United States.
An entire floor of the build- ing will be devoted to several distinctive boutiques showcas- ing trendsetting clothing labels from Japan, including Baby, The Stars Shine Bright (Tokyo), Black Peace Now (Tokyo), 6 per- cent DOKIDOKI (Tokyo), and SOU•SOU (Kyoto). A short-term rotating storefront will fea- ture a new brand every two to three months. These shops, sev- eral of which are pioneers of culture expressed through film, art, fashion and special events.
A spacious, 143-seat cinema space with cutting-edge sound and projection equipment, will be housed on the building’s lower level and will be the soul of the NEW PEOPLE experience. It will screen some of the latest and hottest films from Japan, as well as classics, documentaries, and anime, mak- ing it the only cin- Harajuku, a vibrant district in Tokyo renowned for its unique designers, will make their retail debut in the United States at NEW PEOPLE. The building also will house a café, an inventive NEW PEOPLE retail store, and a 2,000 sq. ft. art gallery providing an important venue for a new generation of artists inspired by Japanese pop culture.
